36 Examples: How To Say Thank You For Your Advice

Saying thank you for the advice is thoughtful and kind. With a few sentences, you can show your appreciation for the advice. 

Of course, how you word the “Thank you for your advice” message will depend on the situation. For example, what you say to a colleague will differ from what you say to your best friend. 

Thank You for Your Advice or Advise? 

The difference between advice and advise is that advice is a noun, and advise is a verb.

Advice is a noun, as it represents the opinion or suggestion given to you.

Advise is a verb that is the process of receiving advice. 

For example, you will want to say I appreciate your advice, and not I appreciate your advise. However, thank you for advising me is appropriate since advising is the verb.

How To Thank Someone for Advice Tips

Sometimes it’s hard to know what to say. So here are a few tips to help you say thanks for the advice. Example messages will follow. 

Tip #1: The best way to thank someone for their for advice is with a specific thank you message. Express what the advice was and how it impacted you.

Tip #2: If you are stumped for words, a short one-line, Thank you for your advice, is better than not saying thank you. You can also add a word to compliment the advice, such as:

  • Thank you for your valuable advice. 
  • Thank you for your thoughtful advice. 
  • Thank you for your kind advice. 

Tip #3: If someone gives you advice in an email and you are not sure yet if you will take their advice, an appropriate response is,Thank you for your advice. I will consider it and let you know.”

Tip #4: You may also want to check out the examples in the thank you for the information post, as it may be possible for your situation to substitute the word information with advice.

Tip #5: In sensitive or very personal situations, you may not want to include revealing details if you think there is a chance someone other than the intended recipient will see your note.

Tip #6: If you feel like you want to with more than a thank-you note, you could consider giving them a gift card to a restaurant or a store that they like to shop at. Or check out or list of thank you gift ideas.

Tip #7: Thanks for your advice may be considered casual, which is fine for most situations. Thank you for your advice sounds more professional. Using Thank you instead of Thanks is recommended for professional situations.

Note: Fill in words in [brackets] as appropriate.

Thank you for giving me advice about [advice topic]. Then a sentence explaining how you benefited from the advice or how it helped solve the problem. Add any other details you would like to include.

Sometimes we receive advice from a colleague, team member, or boss. 

#1 I am thankful for your opinion about the position in your department. I am grateful for the extra details you were able to provide beyond the job description. Because of your input, I have decided not to apply for the position as it’s not what I am looking for as a next career step. I hope your department finds the right person soon.

#2 You are a wonderful friend. Thanks for advising me on the job I was considering applying for when I contacted you. Because of what you said about taking a risk to try something different, I will apply for the job! I also updated my resume based on your feedback. I will let you know if I get an interview.
