Farewell Thank You Messages For Coworkers: A Complete Guide with 35 Examples

When leaving a job, you may want to write your coworkers, boss, or employees thank you and farewell messages. Or you can write a farewell goodbye message to a coworker or boss when they leave the company.

Writing a pleasant goodbye note may encourage others to remember you fondly. Saying thank you to coworkers is #8 on the list of 15 things to do before leaving a job. I’ve had to say thank you and goodbye to coworkers a few times, and I know it isn’t always easy.

At the office, the farewell message is usually sent via email when sending the same message to a group of people, such as a team or others that you had contact with.

When saying goodbye to one person, such as your boss, mentor, or close coworker, you may want to write a handwritten note instead of sending an email. Handwritten notes may feel more personal, and the person will likely keep them longer than an email.

Depending on how much interaction you want with your colleagues want before your last day helps you determine when to send your farewell message. You could send your email on your last day to limit interaction. Or, if you want your coworkers to have more notice and time to say goodbye, send it a few days or a week before your last day.

If you are retiring, read through the retirement thank you messages.

Most of the goodbye messages are example farewell messages written by the person leaving the job. However, a section below contains examples of what to write to the departing colleague.

Writing Farewell Thank You Notes

You don’t have to thank or say goodbye to everyone on the list below with a farewell message. I listed others to whom you may also want to write a message that you may not have considered otherwise.

  • Your team (could use a group email)
  • Your co-workers that were not on your team (could use a group email)
  • Your boss (individual note is best unless you don’t have anything special to say to the boss. And then you can include your boss in the group email)
  • Your employees (individual if you have specific things to say to one person, use group for your entire team)
  • Anyone else you had contact with that you feel like saying goodbye to or thanking before your last day

If you know of someone else that is leaving, you may want to send them a message. If they send you a farewell email, you could reply and write them a farewell message

What to include in your farewell thank you message

Below are some suggestions for what types of things to include in your farewell note. They are followed by sections of examples notes written to a boss, employee, and coworkers.

  • Your last day date, in case anyone wants to say goodbye to you in person (if you work at the same location) or reply to your message.
  • Where and what your next job is. People always wonder! But that’s entirely up to you. Don’t share about your next job if you are not comfortable doing so.
  • If sending an email, the subject line could be:
    • Farewell and best wishes
    • My last day is [Date]
    • Goodbye and contact info
    • Thank you
  • Message content which could include:
    • I look forward to our paths crossing again in the future.
    • I enjoyed working with you.
    • Please stay in touch.
    • It’s been an honor working with you.
    • I wish you all the best with your future endeavors.
    • Compliments of the team or to an individual.
    • There are more examples in the notes below to inspire your farewell messages.
  • The thank you message
    • Usually, I recommend being specific when thanking someone. However, that is nearly impossible to do in a group email. So, your farewell note might feel generic, which is okay in this situation.
    • Thank you for all of your help and support.
    • Thank you for being great to work with.
    • I am grateful to have worked with such a wonderful group of people.
    • I appreciate the time you spent mentoring me and helping me to grow my skills
  • Contact information, if you want to stay in contact with people! Maybe you don’t. Only provide contact information if you are genuinely okay with someone contacting you in the future. If you don’t want a bunch of Facebook friend invites from acquaintances, don’t include your Facebook info.
    • Social media accounts like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
    • Email address
    • Phone number
    • A link to your website/blog if you have one.
