Showing appreciation and gratitude for a donation will build goodwill with the donor and perhaps lead to more donations in the future.
The examples notes below will provide you with some inspiration for your thank you note. These samples are for when you desire to write a short note instead of a long thank you letter.
Tips for your donation note or letter:
- Show the impact. If it makes sense for your situation, include a sentence about how you/your cause are benefiting from the donation. There are many, many things that can be donated: cars, money for various causes, cat surgery, scholarship money, medical expenses, etc. With sites like GoFundMe, the possibilities have become endless.
- Write more. If a donation was made directly to you (not to an organization), you might want to opt for a full-length letter to express your gratitude and show how much the donation means to your life. You can explain your background and how you expect the donation will change your life.
- Personalize. Whenever possible, address the donor by name, instead of generic phrases like “Dear Friend.”
- More tips. For more tips and donation thank you letter templates (which are typically longer than a note), review the Wild Apricot donation thank you post or the Donor Box guide.
The wording for your note or letter will be different, depending on if you received a donation from someone, or if you are thanking a donor that contributed to your organization.
Both templates show the content to include in a donation note. If you want to write a letter, you’ll want to include more paragraphs (and perhaps include a story).
