If you’ve been invited to a wedding or wedding reception, express your gratitude with a message or note of thanks.
The tips, template, and examples will help you write a wedding invitation reply message to say thank you for the invitation to their wedding. I’ve also included an example of thank-you messages if you’ve already been to the wedding or reception.
Saying thank you with a message or note does not replace the RSVP card or requested way of responding to the invitation. If you received an RSVP or response card, that should still be mailed as soon as possible. Or if they asked for your response in another way, please do that. Wedding Invitation Reply Message Template
The below templates can help you with a reply to a wedding invitation. As you write a reply for a wedding invitation, the wording must be adjusted based on whether you are writing your note before or after attending. Also, I have provided wording if you need to decline the wedding invite.
Before the wedding
Dear [Person’s Name],
Thank you for inviting [us/me] to your wedding! [Indicate if you will be attending or not]. [We are looking forward to it!] or [Unfortunately, we can’t make it – and then say why you are not coming if you want to].

Here are some ways to reply to a wedding invitation to let them know if you will attend.
Thank You, We Will Attend
These messages are examples of how to respond when you’re going to the wedding.
#1 We are excited to attend your wedding on July 5th. All four of us will be coming. Thank you for inviting us! We are looking forward to it. See you then.
#2 Thank you for inviting us to your wedding on April 4th. Bob and I will attend, but the kids will stay with their grandparents. We will have fun at the reception too. With no kids coming along, it will feel like a date night for us. And, of course, we are happy to celebrate your love and marriage.
#3 Thank you for inviting me to your wedding. The invitation was beautiful, and I’m looking forward to seeing our family as we celebrate your marriage.
#4 Thank you for the invitation to your wedding. We are looking forward to it. Both of us will be there.
#5 Congratulations to the happy couple! We will be delighted to attend your wedding.
#6 Thank you for inviting me to your wedding. I’m excited to be a guest on your special day. I will be bringing Jake as my plus one.
#7 Thank you for the wedding invitation. The card was stunning. We will be able to attend and are excited to be part of your special day.
Thank You, We Will Not Attend
These messages are examples of responding when you will NOT be attending the wedding.
#1 Thank you for inviting us to your wedding on March 21. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to attend because we will be away on vacation that week. We wish you all the best as you start your new life together.
#2 Thank you for inviting me to your wedding in June. I am sorry to miss it. I have another commitment that weekend and will not be able to attend. I look forward to hearing all about it!
#3 Thank you so much for inviting us to your wedding next month. We appreciate the invitation. However, we will not be able to come. We wish you the best on your big day.
#4 Thank you for the invitation to your wedding. We’d like to attend but we will be on our annual vacation that weekend.
#5 Your wedding invitation is beautiful! Thank you so much for inviting us. We will not be able to make it to the marriage ceremony. However, you can plan to see us at the reception.
#6 Thanks for the invite to your wedding. I’m sorry that I will be able to attend. Best wishes for a wonderful day!
#7 Wow! We are so excited for you and Jake. Thank you for the invitation to your weeding. Unfortunately, we will not be able to attend.
Thank You Message After Attending a Wedding
Here’s how to say thank you after attending a wedding as a guest. In the section, the messages assume you also attended a wedding reception after the marriage ceremony. If you only attended the wedding, you can leave out the sentence about the reception.
#1 Your wedding was beautiful. Thank you so much for inviting us. We also had fun at the reception, and the food was great, especially the [fancy dish name].
#2 Thanks for inviting us to your wedding. The music and ceremony were beautiful. We could see how much you love each other. And meeting your extended family at the reception was excellent, too.
#3 Thank you for inviting me to your wedding. Your pastor and church family seem lovely—what a blessing for you. The food, especially the chicken, was fantastic at the reception.
#4 Thank you for including us on your wedding day. We were grateful for the invitation. You two make a wonderful couple, and we hope to see your love for each other grow as the years go by. Congratulations!
#5 Thank you for inviting us to your wedding. The wedding was beautiful, and the reception was fun. We enjoyed the food and dancing as we celebrated your union.

Wedding Reception Only
Sometimes, people host a reception separate from the wedding. For example, the couple may host a reception if it was a destination wedding or married at the courthouse. These examples are for if you were only invited to the reception.
Thank You, We Will Attend The Reception
#1 We are happy to inform you that we will attend your wedding reception on July 20th. See you then!
#2 Thanks for the invite to your wedding reception on June 4th. Bob and I will both be attending and are looking forward to it. The venue sounds delightful as we both like outdoor parties.
#3 Thank you for inviting us to your wedding reception. How you guys love each other so much is inspiring, and it’s our pleasure to celebrate your marriage. We will see you on the 20th!
Thank You, We Will Note Attend The Reception
#1 Thank you for inviting me to your reception. Unfortunately, I can’t attend, but it meant a lot to me to receive an invitation. Let’s plan to go to dinner in a few months, and you can share the day’s memories with me.
#2 We appreciate being invited to your wedding reception. Unfortunately, we cannot make it due to another commitment that day. I look forward to hearing all about your wedding another day.
#3 Thank you for inviting us to your wedding reception. We had a wonderful time meeting your family and eating the fancy food. The oysters were a nice treat for us. We wish your marriage all the best and are excited to see what your future brings.
Thank You Message After Attending a Wedding Reception
These messages are for when you were a guest at the wedding reception but were not at the wedding ceremony.
#1 Your wedding reception was so much fun. Thanks for inviting my husband and me. [Location] was the perfect place for it. Also, we enjoyed everything from the food to the other guests. Best wishes for your future.
#2 Thanks for having us come to your wedding reception. It was a delight to celebrate your marriage with you. The barn at [place] was the perfect place to have it. [Name of person that owns the barn] was an excellent host. And the wedding party looked great in the photos with the beautiful sunset in the background.
#3 Thank you for the invitation to your wedding reception. The old barn was the perfect place for it. The lighting made it feel romantic. We loved the music and dancing too. Congratulations on your commitment to each other.
#4 We had a delightful time at your wedding reception. Thank you for inviting us to celebrate your marriage. The food, dancing, music, and meeting your other friends made for a great evening. You made a great couple!
