Authors spend many hours writing books each year. What can you do to let an author know that their book is appreciated?
How to thank an author
Most authors do not make a high salary. Helping an author increase sales is a great way to thank them for writing the book! Sending a thank-you note is another wonderful way to thank an author. Thank-you note examples are included at the end of the post.
Buy their book. Buying the book will generate revenue for them and on sites like Amazon, it will increase their sales ranking.
Write a review. This could be on Amazon, another online store or on your website. When I see many positive reviews I am much more likely to make the purchase.
Tell others about the book. This can be done in several ways. I track the books I am reading on Goodreads. My Goodreads friends can see all of the books I have read. Perhaps they will see something in my list and want to read it too.
Another way to tell others is by sharing what you are reading on your website (if you have one). I have a list of each book I’ve read so far in 2015. Or, if appropriate, you could interview the author to introduce them to your audience.
Links to the books can also be shared on social media. For example, on Facebook, you could write a short summary of why you liked the book or why you think others should read it and include an Amazon link to the book.
Read it for book club Several of the books I’ve read this year were selections for my church book club or the book club at work. One of the great things about book clubs is it exposes us to authors we may not have read otherwise.
The most recent book for my work book club was Big Little Lies. I had not encountered this author, Liane Moriarty, previously. I loved this book and will be looking to see what else she has written.
Write the author a thank-you note
When a book impacts your life in a significant way, I recommend sending them a thank-you. This can be done with a handwritten note, in an email, on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media sites.
Dave Ramsey’s book The Total Money Makeover helped my family get on a budget and out of debt. This was several years ago. I sent him a thank-you note similar to this one:
I want to let you know that your book, The Total Money Makeover, has helped my family get on a budget. We were also able to pay off all of our debts except for the mortgage. I felt like I got a raise once I knew where all my money was going each month. Thank you for writing the book and sharing your story to help others.
